The Razer Raion Fightpad is becoming a better fight pad by adding features it lacks to existing fight pads. Raion Fightpad adds many mechanical components, which people are sure to love about arcade sticks. Six-button layout placement, eight-way directional movement, quick buttons, and turn it into a suitable controller. You may be in trouble because the price is high. However, the Raion Fightpad will provide a comfortable feel compared to the standard DualShock 4. It is a niche, but the Raion will hit hard at competitive players who prefer to hold a controller.
Design
Raion doesn’t look like a dedicated controller for the PS4. It has a shape that is wider and almost flat. You see a lot more space on the analog stick, making the PS button look very small because it is surrounded by space. You will feel very comfortable holding Raion because it provides a good grip. Your right thumb makes the motion more significant and comprehensive to reach the six face buttons.
A larger, flatter surface makes room for several larger buttons. You have the large, clickable D-Pad on the left side roughly the same position as the DS4. The D-Pad is a single piece pushed in eight directions, similar to an 8-way joystick. It’s as good as you can on the D-Pad, allowing easy Street Fighter-style quarter and semicircle movements. It’s still not as natural as moving on the joystick.
Components
Raion uses a mechanical switch, either on the Pad or on the button’s surface. This feature is more potent than membranes and other controllers used in most other gamepads. Razer claims the mechanical switch used for the front buttons be used for 80 million keystrokes. It feels odd that the directional Pad clicks loudly while the face buttons are barely muted, but both components feel light and responsive. The board relates cardinal and diagonal directions, providing individual input with different tactile feedback, similar to an arcade joystick with an octagonal gate. It is helpful for fighting games that require precise diagonal information.
