The Razer Ouroboros is a product centered on the Razer snake, going extraordinary with gaming mice. Reference to the alchemical symbol, a snake eating its tail. Despite its funky name, Ouroboros is the new apex predator in the Razer snake pack. With all the best hardware and a modular design that lets you customize every aspect of your mouse for a comfortable and competitive edge, other creepy slithers. When it comes to gaming mice, you don’t always get what you pay. These peripherals sit near the top of the heap in terms of customization but sacrifice comfort at every turn. While Ouroboros offers a conformation and control scheme for every gamer, most users would be better off finding a mouse that suits them right out of the box.

The Ouroboros is a case study of why a kitchen sink approach to mouse design isn’t necessarily a good idea. At first glance, the mouse looks like an industrial tool, with sharp corners, protruding buttons, and an unsightly gap in the center of the armrest. Flip the mouse, however, and it reveals a lot of options. By loosening the two small screws (including the screwdriver), the user can adjust the mouse’s length (and the size of the gap between the button and the palm rest).

They can also change the armrest’s height, activate or deactivate the right and left trigger buttons, or swap the textured pads for the thumb, ring finger, and little finger for the actual thumb/finger rest. The mouse is entirely symmetrical, so both left and right-handed users can design a custom setup that suits them. Ouroboros’ adjustable length also means that players with grips of palms, claws, and fingertips are all in the same place.

The Ouroboros has these features that sound interesting but cover up the hard truth. The mouse is uncomfortable to hold. With a gap in the palm rest, being very comfortable in the grip will still leave most of your appendages untouched. The thumb rest and textured cushions are comfortable, but overall, Ouroboros is not nearly as comfortable as a mouse with impressive backs or cushions. In testing, the left and right mouse buttons were thin and indecisive. It’s almost impossible to hit the trigger without accidentally activating the opposite side button, and sharp corners everywhere hit this reviewer’s hand, especially during intense gaming sessions.

Razer Ouroboros

Razer Ouroboros uses the company’s Synapse software, which allows users to program profiles for the mouse. You can upload it to the cloud to be accessed from any computer. The mouse itself doesn’t save any profiles. Ouroboros has many settings to play around with as it befits a mouse of its complexity and price tag. Ouroboros offers 13 buttons, and 12 are entirely programmable (the left mouse button is not). The user can set up individual profiles linked to a specific game, although they do not automatically reset after it is closed. Dots-per-inch (DPI) sensitivity is also fully adjustable, with an impressive range of 100 to 8,200 DPI. By default, the two buttons just below the scroll wheel can change the DPI on the fly.

Few gamers swear by Ouroboros, and it’s easy to see why. Some mice are more flexible or more accommodating to unusual hand conformations. However, a mouse you’ll be using for hours in intense gaming sessions needs to be comfortable above all else, and Ouroboros falls short of that count. If you don’t mind the taste, you can turn Ouroboros into your unique mouse and use it to play your favorite games at a very high level. If not, a mouse that fits your hand by default is probably the better – and less expensive – option.
